This photo takes me back 10 years to a time when three special Podencos came into our care late in 2014.
Each of these boys, Juan, Raine, and Zeus, arrived with a story of sadness but also filled us with determination to help them.
Juan was found near our finca, @@abandoned in the sweltering heat of summer. Dehydrated and confused, he was lucky to have been spotted by friends who brought him to safety.
Raine, a beautiful black Podenco, was handed into the perrera completely blind. After seeing a specialist, we learned he’d likely been blind his entire life. I still can’t imagine the fear he must have felt in the noisy, chaotic perrera.
Zeus was discovered in a sewage pit, covered in filth and suffering from a severe eye injury. Sadly, his eye couldn’t be saved, but his spirit remained strong.
Despite everything they’d been through, these three formed the most incredible bond. They became a little pack, with Juan and Zeus guiding Raine and including him in every game and zooming around the paddocks. Watching them play together was a joy—proof of their resilience and the healing power of friendship.
My role was simple: to give them a safe place to heal, tend to their wounds, and show them they could trust humans again. Their time at the finca changed their destiny, leading them to the forever homes they so deserved.
Raine, Juan, and Zeus will always hold a special place in my heart as a reminder of why we do what we do
(Just to prove how high a podenco can jump, on one occasion when I was staying with Bev and Warren, I watched a podenca jump, scale this fence and take herself off into the campo. She returned some time later with a rabbit as a present!)
