This is the story of Hermes, who was adopted from Bev Farmer of Podenco friends. 18th August was his Gotcha day.
'18th August
Hermes. His final kiss and hug for Warren - a very special man - the day he left.
But this wasn’t his first adoption .. he went to an adopter in the UK in June 2015 .. it appeared to be a perfect home homecheck all good experience of Sighthounds a volunteer for an animal sanctuary. Then after a few months messages sent he wasn’t well, tested him for leishmania was negative but insisted he was treated. Then a couple of months later another message he was suffering. They wasn’t prepared to pay for blood tests to already know what the results would be. It was time to let him go due a list of health concerns.
I could not accept such a young vibrant dog could be so sick so I arranged for him to come back to the Finca in Spain. That decision saved his life after arriving and over 500€ doing extensive tests X-rays ultrasounds apart from been underweight my vets confirmed him fit and healthy.. he didn’t have a bad bone in his body. Played with every one including the pups. Loved people so easy going.
Then Gordon Graham approached me about adopting another podenco I told him about Hermes ..This time is was a perfect match and he gets to run free in large fields even competing at Bikejor.
I always worry every time I agree an adoption and although go through a thorough process. There are times it doesn’t work. The majority of times it’s for very genuine reasons but Hermes was much more sinister. We have been very fortunate over the years only to rehome very few which I am so thankful for.
Hermes first adopter blocked me after I sent them all the results from the tests etc showing he wasn’t sick. The final message “ he just didn’t fit my lifestyle “. So they were prepared to euthanize him and end his life. It’s every rescuers nightmare their dogs are euthanized and it happens . Thankfully we were able to get him back quickly before the adopter could go through with it.
He was saved twice.. now he has had a wonderful seven years and many more to come. Thank you Gordon for giving him a second chance
