Introducing blind podenco Bocelli - a new learning curve for us

Bocelli (known as Bo) is the second of our newly adopted podencos. Unusually for a white podenco, he is blind rather than deaf as some white dogs are. My OH was actually looking to adopt another galgo but he spotted Bo on the Ibizan Hound Rescue website and was immediately drawn to him. Bo was also on the website of Blind Dog Rescue UK and so I completed the pre-adoption form with them and kept my fingers crossed!

Bo had been in a wonderful foster home in the UK after apparently spending most of his 8 years on the end of a chain in a 'horrible place' in Lorca, Murcia. His fosterer believes he can see shadows/shapes and he adapted well to living in a home environment with other dogs.

Finding the right home for a rescue dog

Often the history of a rescue dog is unknown. The dog's character needs to be assessed by the staff in the kennels or by a fosterer to ensure that the right home is found, both for the dogs but also the right dog for the adoptant. Life with Podenca Rosely - she makes us smile every day!

Regular readers may remember that at the end of November Podenca Andaluz Rosely joined our household. It's a big learning curve for her after a few years living in a shed producing litters of babies for an unpleasant hunter. When the hunter had no further use for her, he handed her over to a local rescue in Alhaurin le Grande in Malaga province. Ann Marie Payne of Ann's Canine Care took her into the finca and introduced Rosely to life in a home, preparing her for eventual adoption.

Rosely is a very sweet podenca, not surprisingly very fearful of men as Spanish hunting dogs very often are. She is my shadow, to such an extent that the first time I left home to go to my volunteer work at a local animal charity shop, she rushed into the lounge, up on the sofa and got tangled up in the vertical blinds!! Luckily my other half heard the commotion and rescued her without injury to herself, but the blinds will need serious attention from a repair man!! Needless to say, the lounge door is firmly shut every time we leave the house!!

Podenca Elize with Galgos Rescue Almeria

This podenco girl was found two weeks ago in Cuevas del Almanzora, looking for food among the trash cans of a restaurant, skinny, fragile, shy.

Look at her now, Elize has become a real podenco as we know them.

Confident, a strong character and she can stand her ground among the much larger galgos.

Tiny injured podenca needing help from an association

This is such a tragic photo which appeared on my Podenco Post facebook page. Up to yesterday, no association had taken her. Have asked for more info.

'Update 02-01-2022 Well nothing we continue with more cases, rescued this afternoon, just have to look at it to know that she has escaped from hell. She has a chip, her owner a very older man couldn't take care of her anymore and he was wrong, because he handed it over to an individual reported several times for not having the dogs in condition and going to collect animals from everyone who doesn't want them. She was able to escape and was picked up scared and with a fatal foot between the olives. The cede, at least it's in the name of its former owner, born in 2013.

We are that we can't, we don't have any means or room for so many and this dog will need surgery, desperately need an association or protectora to help. In a village of Jaén, hellhole for hunting dogs.

Tiny Podenco Nero hoping for a forever home

Appeal for help for a very sweet little podenco.

'We are urgently looking for a home for Nero, a 9 year old senior podenco male. He is currently staying at EBA in Spain . He was found on the street by volunteers with a broken eye (which has been removed) and a wound in his neck.

Nero is a great dog despite all he's been through. Extremely sweet, social, and cheerful and can be with other dogs and kids. . (Mits who are used to dealing with dogs, of course) . He weighs 10 kg.

Who will give this adorable podenco a warm forever home?
