Regular readers may remember that at the end of November Podenca Andaluz Rosely joined our household. It's a big learning curve for her after a few years living in a shed producing litters of babies for an unpleasant hunter. When the hunter had no further use for her, he handed her over to a local rescue in Alhaurin le Grande in Malaga province. Ann Marie Payne of Ann's Canine Care took her into the finca and introduced Rosely to life in a home, preparing her for eventual adoption.
Rosely is a very sweet podenca, not surprisingly very fearful of men as Spanish hunting dogs very often are. She is my shadow, to such an extent that the first time I left home to go to my volunteer work at a local animal charity shop, she rushed into the lounge, up on the sofa and got tangled up in the vertical blinds!! Luckily my other half heard the commotion and rescued her without injury to herself, but the blinds will need serious attention from a repair man!! Needless to say, the lounge door is firmly shut every time we leave the house!!
She also protested about sleeping on her own in the kitchen over night, so for the first time ever I am allowing a dog to sleep in my bedroom! Not on the bed, I hasten to add - my bed is for me - but on a snuggle bed on the rug on the floor. She's very good, doesn't get up in the night, but does snore!!
We live on the edge of a small town so after 3 weeks with us, I am now introducing her to short walks round our close of bungalows and within sight of a main road and more traffic. She has met one or two men washing their cars in their driveways but has yet to meet another dog, although there are several living in the area. Each day she gets a little more confident.
Blind Podenco Bo joined the family a week after Rosely. He's happy to sleep a lot and very quickly sensed his way out of the back door, down the ramp and into the garden to the toilet. I've attached a bell to Rosely's collar so Bo always knows where she is - earning her the nickname Tinkerbell!
Just this last week Rosely has taken to sharing Bo's bed, as you can see in the photo, so hopefully the next stage will be for the to play together outside - Bo's already showing interest when Rosely has a zoomy!!
Rosely loves soft toys, her favourite is a 'mallard duck' which was the last toy I bought for Polar before he died in April. Addded to her collection already is an elephant, another duck and Jaws, a soft shark! She's also tdaken to the bed in the office - so officially the Office Supervisor!
Whilst still fearful of men, her character is blossoming and there isn't a day goes by without she makes us smile at her antics.
