I've only visited Portugal on holiday, I've never been on a rescue so haven't visited any refuges or rescue associations.
Recently I learned about a rescue association in Central Portugal, Louzanimales. This weblink will take you to their website.
This is the story of Louzanimales.
Louzanimales - Association for the Animals of Lousã - was formed by a group of citizens with the mission to defend the rights of animals and, at the same time, reduce the overpopulation of homeless animals in Lousã through sterilization and the development of initiatives that seek their referral for adoption, when their sociability characteristics allow it.
Louzanimales is a 100% voluntary Association, without its own facilities for welcoming animals. It is a group of citizens who offer their contribution to the animal cause.
Sterilization of wild and stray animals through CED Capture-Sterilization-Return programs;
The development of awareness actions that address issues such as the welfare and health of animals, the importance of sterilization and the responsibility in adopting an animal, among others;
Collaboration with public entities aimed at collecting stray animals in the dissemination and adoption process of animals. The association has a partnership with the Municipality of Lousã, in the space of the provisional facilities of the municipal kennel and in the sterilization of all adopted animals).
The promotion, on the third Saturday of each month, from 10 am to 12:30 pm, of an Animal Adoption Campaign, with the Lousã court, with the support of the Lousã City Council. In these campaigns, the general public will be able to have contact with the dogs in the kennel, as well as with the animals in Temporary Care Families.
