Podenca Kira - hoping for a forever home in her twilight years

'There are many people who when they see their dogs get old, get upset and suffer in anticipation of the ending that unfortunately will come. They would like them to be eternal, never to leave and always live with them. They take care of them, they spoil them, they do what is necessary to save their dog, to help him spend a few more years. I've met a lot of people like this in the Protectora.

But unfortunately there are others with different behavior, because when your dog, or any other animal, ages and is sick, they abandon it because it no longer serves its use: entertain the children, show off how beautiful it is, hunt. That's happened to poor Kira, aged 14, she has stopped serving someone, someone who never loved her, and they have abandoned her in Zoosanitarian.

She's with us now. We'd like to know something about her story, to tell us what she was used for, but we'll never know, although seeing her race, and her state, it's not hard for us to imagine.

'A couple of days ago we received a request for help for this precious little podenquita called Light. Luz was found at night lying in the gutter near the football field of a town in Jaén She couldn't walk since she has two fractured front legs. She was admitted waiting for surgery to put plates on both legs. It has a good yet expensive forecast. Hopefully she can walk again soon and, after a few months of cures and rehabilitation, she will fully recover.

We're asking for your help to pay the costs of the Light operation again. If you can collaborate even if only with little, for us and for Luz it will be a great help. We'll be giving news of their evolution.

Podenca Lolita with Akira Animal Shelter - hoping for a forever home

'is Lolita she was known as the Moraira Carpark dog. She was notoriously difficult to capture and even with sausages that contained a sedative she still eluded everyone. She was eventually rescued and brought to Akira. She has gradually been building up her confidence and volunteers and staff spending time with her.

Lolita is now ready for a home she gets excited to go out for walks and enjoys being petted so he really needs a home to call her own.

Sadly this is the lot of too many podencos. This one is in Huelva...if she can be caught there is room in a shelter for her. Fingers crossed.

Patrulla de Patas - rescuing hounds in Granada

At 14.00 on the 09/30/2020, the volunteers at Baza dog pound were told about a dog tied up on the motorway near Granada, 100km away from Baza. A rescuer from Baza didn't hesitate to drive and find her. She found her not tied up, but in an absolutely horrendous state. It seems she had been there for over 4 days! Crawling around in pain, not eating or drinking.

She has a fractured pubic bone, and TWO BROKEN FEMURS! GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT SHE ENDURED. In Baza there is no traumatolgist surgeon, so on the 10/10/2020 we were told by the Hospital Sur Granada that the extensive surgery she needs will cost 1236.20 €. In the Norte clinic Baza we have been told that she NEEDS SURGERY IMMEDIATELY, THE BREAKS ARE HORRIBLE AND IF THE BONE BEGINS TO FUSE BADLY THE PROBLEM WILL INCREASE. So Irys was booked in for surgery for the 02/10/2020. That meant we had to find all the money in time. Amazingly we raised ALL the money needed for the surgery and the Baza vet bill in less than a day.
