Recognising heatstroke in dogs

Tilly Tea-Leaf Syndrome - with Beverley Farmer of Podenco Friends

Tilly was Bev Farmer's first podenco - from small beginnings come Podenco Friends and the hundreds of podencos Bev and her late partner Warren have rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed.

'Tilly was such a naughty dog this came up in FB memories and made me smile thinking of what she did. Especially chewing the dials off the washing machine so we had no clue what cycle it was on and ended up having to buy a new one.

Tilly Tea-Leaf syndrome - (Liberatio bonorum suorum) is a condition commonly known has the liberation of personal possessions. It was first officially named in 2003 after a Podenco called Tilly. This condition has been reported worldwide and effects all breeds of dogs, some more than others

Symptoms: The stealing of various items and running around the garden showing them off to everyone. In particular shoes, underwear, tea towels, cushions and in extreme cases mobile phones, TV controls and at times destruction of such items.

'This is the final video diary of Ocho , when he first arrived he had to go into quarantine so was not able to mix with the other dogs. He was so happy to finally get to play and this was an important test to see if he exhibited any agression or dominance to other dogs per the report from where he came from .. Introduced him to Brisa first, she wont stand for any nonsense he gambled up to her super fast she curled her lip and that was enough .. "OK I get it" said Ocho and was very respectful of her.. Next we brought in smaller Podencos equal or smaller in size to him and he just played like a regular pup. No aggression, no resource guarding of toys or treats. Respectful to the other dogs he has boundaries, no biting of dogs or people. The only thing when he first arrived he would jump up to you and in his excitement and grab your sleeve but that happens often with other dogs when they first arrive and easy to resolve.

There has been a lot of interest in Ocho and for now he is still under assessment. He also tested positive for Ehrlichia which goes to show puppies should be still blood tested. He needs a month's treatment of antibiotics and then wait a couple of weeks to retest. So far he is doing great.'

From a life in chains on Gran Canaria to running free on the beach - Podenca Hinga

To understand why Podencos arrive so fearful you have to see first hand how they live. For Hinga years of chained to a wall in a darken building left her with no trust in people and really had no reason to trust people.

She struggled with a different life and couldn't overcome her fears and many times I wondered would Hinga be locked in the prison of her mind for eternity . Over the months she made a little progress and only when I took her away from the finca for her walks did I get to see a different Hinga. Here was not the place for her to heal and Dave Bennett and Heather Bennett fostered her for almost a year and this was a stepping stone to her new life.

Podenco Spirit - a great example of the spirit of these abused hounds

Do you remember the story of Podenco Spirit, who had his lower jaw shot off! Refugio Candela volunteers had to take a very sick rescued dog to the Anicura Valencia Sur Veterinary Hospital and so they took the opportunity of taking Podenco Spirit so the vet could check him over and see how well he is doing.

'The whole team was delighted to see the blonde again and so was he to meet the people who saved his life again. We don't want to miss sharing it with you as you keep asking us about this handsome boy with the honey eyes.
It was a pleasure, thanks for everything.'

'Theodora is one of the happiest Podencos ever she dances all the time and that tail never stops wagging and once she manages to stand still loves her cuddles.. Always great to take some time out and just have some fun time with the dogs
She is one of our Podenco Canarios from Lanzarote part of our joint project with Laura Johnson of the Kennel Klub on the island . We have been working together for over 7 years helping with the Podencos on the island. They are the primary dogs used for hunting on Lanzarote and very little chance of finding a home. Often locked away in underground caves and buildings usually chained up. It always amazes me that they can put that miserable life behind them and have such zest for life. Podencos are such special dogs they are magical.'

El Podenco - a Spanish national treasure or trash?

'El Podenco

A national treasure? or just trash?

What is about Podencos that incite such passion for them..... for me I see beauty nobility intelligence a creature so unique and magical, those who have adopted one will understand how special and sensitive they are. These should be the national treasure of Spain to be held in reverence to be proud of.... such a truly magnificent creature they should be recognized has part of the national heritage of Spain for they date back to 3000 BC.

Yet daily we receive more reports of Podencos abused, abandoned handed in to Perreras. They are viewed as disposable, not animals with feelings but working dogs and when no longer useful, discarded with as much thought as we would throw a soda can into a bin.

Many are Podenco crosses but they still should be afforded the same respect as the pure bred for they still have the blood of a podenco coursing in their veins. Yet we see them for sale on second hand web sites for a little as 20 euros or to be used as a commodity to exchange for car parts.

'this is the story of Estrella. It’s a sad story, she was born with ataxia (á problem on her brain). Last year we took care of her sister Lunita. Both have the same mum. Estrella is 4 months old. Lunita was more than a year when she came to us. It’s so sad because both girls are so happy and playful. Luckily we could save Estrella also from the people who are breeding to gain money.

Podenco brothers Camilo and Eloy

CELEBRATING OUR CAMILO & ELOY BROTHERS' IMMINENT HAPPY NEXT STEP (please enjoy this round-up from their last year, but soon we hope to post photos of them in a new environment at last), an update on their health, and importantly to ask would anyone like to join me in a very SPECIAL ROLE to help them? This is to be a Pod-God-Mum or Pod-God-Dad to our boys to support them financially in a small way from here on for their exciting "stepping stone" journey as they leave their four walls in the kennels in Spain where they have been invisible for over FIVE years. Please read on for more on all....

So we don't know if the boys will need support for just a few months or for a good while longer, but they will set off any day now, just waiting for transport confirmation. First they are going to the welcoming and expert arms of Michelle at her small family-run kennels near Malaga, and we need to pay their way there for B&B. All thanks to Michelle for her welcome to our two.

Then when they have gained enough confidence in being closer to people and mixing with other dogs they will go on to Anita and Carl's home-from-home lovely sociable foster, just a little way down the road. Here Anita and Carl are wonderfully gifting all their time, but we will cover the boys' food. And if we find they need extra vet work throughout this time I will organise fundraisers which we can all promote. So, a bit like starting primary school and then onto junior school!

And THEN the next step we hope will be a forever family in Finland, thanks to Jaana who will be looking for just the right people to adopt our sweet shy souls. And we so hope this can be one family where the boys can stay together. As one of the core group for our "IN KENNELS & IN-VISIBLE" dogs I am pledging personally to cover the boys' monthly kennels they need to start with at Michelle's. I love these boys and will somehow manage this alone for them if need be.

But if anyone would like to share these costs to help Camilo & Eloy with a small monthly donation that will ease my drippy cash flow AND let me focus more of my time to keep on helping their friends still waiting in the kennels. Just £5 or 5 euros a month or £10 a month or whatever you can afford would really help and it will be good to share updates and news of the boys as a little group of Camilo y Eloy Madrinas y Padrinas and watch their progress <3 <3 . More details on this at the end, but now an update for everyone on their health and travel because it is a big family of us that has helped get Camilo and Eloy to this happy point of being about to leave the kennels they must have thought were all life had to offer them! Our profound thanks to everyone who has stood by with them all this time since we discovered our "Invisibles", our boys.

Health: their blood tests came back, a bit delayed and I have waited to update until all was organised for their medications etc., with thanks to María always for her expert vet advice. Their results were not perfect, but thankfully not so bad either. Essentially both boys are on the very border of leishmania, so we are not treating them but will re-test in a month or two once with Michelle. These tests are cheaper than the original full ones. They both tested positive for rickettsia and ehrlichia tick diseases and are being treated with doxyclycline. We have also paid for normal worm pills and pills against giardia. And new tick treatment.
All in all, as a group (on facebook) we had raised an amazing 545.54 euros for the boys' blood tests, medication and travel - all thanks to kind support from everyone. So I am happy to report this means we had enough: 220 for travel, 150 for both full blood tests, 50 for parvo-coronavirus tests, 50 for panacur (giardia) which leaves 75.54 for worming & tick treaments, which should leave us with a good bit over. I need to finalise costs to pay their vet bills and meds, but it looks like the boys will be fine now up until they reach Malaga! With any left over from their piggy bank to date then we will put it towards their next leishmania tests/any unexpected vet work.

Travel: Will keep you all posted. It will be so brilliant to share photos once they arrive with Michelle! I know it will be an emotional day for Mari Carmen and Rosa Maria who have kept these poddies safe all these years after they were abandoned at their kennels: to say goodbye to the boys but know that they are going to be HAPPY! With thanks to local-to-Malaga fellow podenco advocate Andrea who has offered to have the boys registered in her name for their new transition period until they can reach their families. An extra person to be there rooting for our lads!

Stunning podenco Milo - 2 years in a kennel, needs an adopting family

Milo is an impressive brown podenquito with amber eyes, two years old, weigh 16 pounds, medium size, which in addition to being gorgeous is a puppy love. It has a look that makes you want to eat it with kisses. He's loving, very very noble, sociable with other puppies, cats happens, and at home great. As a good podenco is ideal for company, to be quietly at home and at the same time can be an athlete who loves going out to the mountain, to the beach...

It's two years of life he has spent them locked in a cage, so far that is in foster with a family. It's time for this spectacular podenquito to find that wonderful family.
