Fern’s Law: Compulsory to scan & check microchips to reunite stolen dogs, cats

Many missing microchipped pets are never reunited as it’s optional to scan & check microchip registration. It’s time veterinary professionals, authorities and rescues checked pet & keeper match on the original database at a pets 1st consultation or yearly checkup. It’s their only chance to get home

Vets can play a valuable role in reuniting missing microchipped pets. We have microchipped our pets with the expectation to be reunited if the worst happens and they are lost or stolen. If just one organisation is not committed to scan and check microchip registration the whole system fails and is not fit for purpose. Legislation is needed to replace half hearted ‘strengthened, best practice recommendations’ VetsGetScanning.co.uk

Tripod Podenca Altea with Galgos en Familia - hoping for a forever home

Snares are illegal in Spain but some hunters still use them on their private land, with devastating results is the dogs on on the scent! Here's one such beautiful podenca - now a tripod through no fault of her own. She's with Galgos en Familia in Malaga at the shelter started by Vera Thorenaar.

Altea has the story of a real survivor. She was wandering for weeks on the streets of a town in Córdoba with a trap embed in one of her rear paws, while she was shouting in pain. But she was so untrusting in human being that she didn’t let anyone to catch her even known she had so many people trying to. When finally they could rescue her, they took her to the veterinary, who decided the best option for her was to amputate that paw. Now, she is recovering wonderfully in a foster home with one of our best volunteers.

Her temporary family told us Altea is pure love, she is so calm that she doesn’t move from her bed, where she can finally rest without any pain. She loves being covered with her blanket and sleep. With people she is so affectionate, she loves receiving cuddles to feel warm and loved. Also, she is a very clean girl at home.

Podenco Tiesto with Tail Torrox - waiting for a forever home

Tiesto is another stunning podenco ready for his forever home. Here's what Tail Torrox says about him.

'Tiesto was found running loose in a nearby village. He is estimated to be born in January 2019, weighs 16kg and is 47cm in height. He is a super friendly podenco who loves everyone. He gets on great with other dogs and is full on energy. He would benefit from some lead training and would make a fantastic pet.'

Forsyth & Tedd - coats and sweaters for podencos and galgos

I've just found this page on Bev Farmer's facebook page - brilliant sweaters for podencos and galgos who feel the cold indoors in the cooler weather. My little podenca Bebe is now 16 and the sweater I knitted was too small, so she wears a lightweight fleece body warmer I made. But one of these sweaters is now on her wish list!

Coronovirus - travel from Europe to the US

In the early hours a press release was made announcing suspension of travel from European countries to the USA for 30 days. This has been amended that this does not include US Citizens (go figure) .. however it will impact on dogs traveling out there and with so-much uncertainty SHUG have decided to postpone flights which has a knock on effect on us here in Spain. Crystal in the photo is due to fly to Canada in a few days so we are waiting to see if Canada will impose similar restrictions.

Podenco Felix - one month on after rescue

At the end of January I posted a story about a young podenco found starving at the roadside, taken into care with Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends. He was named Felix.

Here's what Bev says about him now. 'One month ago Felix was a broken, scared and very thin Podenco pup abandoned and all alone in the campo. Some loving care and good nutrition, today he is a happy loving full of fun dog.'
