Portuguese Podengo Mhysa - with Dogs of Portugal waiting for a forever home

Portugal has its own type of Podengo - in olden days they went to see on ships to control the rat population! Here's a gorgeous little Podengo hoping for a forever home. Contact Dogs of Portugal directt.

Little Mhysa was found on the street with her two babies… She must have been so afraid trying to protect them. The babies are already rehomed. She is still with us, shy but gaining confidence. Very gentle. Good with other dogs.

Remember Podenco Rene? Happy in his forever home

Remember our poor podenco boy Rene whose adoption offers kept falling through one after the other by pure bad luck, and how just when he was getting pretty sad and feeling totally invisible he fell on his paws with forever Mum Deborah Ashton back in December?

Well here's a little album of our cheeky Spaniard's first months in the UK for all his fans to enjoy and to see how happy he is: zooming round the garden, out on field walks, hobnobbing at doggy day care and getting busy with the ironing - or is that practising surfing for his holidays!! And I have to include his and Deborah's first-meeting photo again as last but not least as it says it all: these two just love each other. Greetings from Rene to all his friends and in particular his special people, godparents and kennels Mums. As ever it was a team effort to keep him safe all that time from when we first rescued him from the pound.

Podenco Ruso - from hell at the hands of a hunter to heaven in a loving home

A heartwarming rehoming story from Vivien.

'I heard about the plight of the Podenco’s on Podenco Post in 2012. On it was a article about a Podenco called Ruso. He had been rescued from a hunter where he had been kept in a cage since he was a puppy. He was badly abused, starving and ill when he was found. He had been rejected as a hunting dog as he was no good at hunting so he was left to die.

When I saw Ruso on Podenco post I sent an email to a lady called Ainhoa who helps a wonderful lady in Seville called Inmaculada agomez Gonzalez who rescues Podencos and Galgos from a gipsy settlement.
Because she did not speak any English I was only contacted by Ainhoa who arranged Ruso’s transport to the UK with SOS podencos.

Sadly since having been brought back to health Ruso was still in kennels with no one showing any interest in him. We decided to foster him.

He arrived in the UK from his long journey from Spain, we first saw him being taken out of the van and he looked so frightened and cowered when placed on the ground.

These two handsome podenco brothers Camilo and Eloy are losing their lives living year after year in what amounts to a cage. They have been invisible in kennels in rural Spain now for over 3 years. We are looking for a loving and very dog-experienced adoptive family who would like to take these extremely timid boys to their heart and gently, patiently help them blossom and be happy, as they so deserve.

Podencos imprisoned and starving! Now rescued.

Thank goodness for the Brit who followed his nose and discovered these 4 podencos on short chains in a disused building. Hopefully the owner of the dogs will now be heavily fined and imprisoned. Read the full story here.

Elly was found hiding under a woodpile but thanks to the love and kindness shown to her by her finder this little girl has blossomed. 15 month old Elly has a wonderful nature and loves to play. Good with other dogs.

Bikejoring with rescued podencos!

Hope you can see this video, from facebook. These are 2 rescued podencos adopted through Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends, doing bikejoring. It's more than just a case of getting on a bike and tying them in front, they need to be trained to run ahead, as with canicross.

'We are with Spirit in Lepanto Veterinary Center, Veterinary Traumatology

For weeks we have observed that the mucosal tissues that covered the prosthesis implanted at Valencia Sur Veterinary Hospital were retracting, leaving the irons more and more visible. This situation is quite uncomfortable for him: so we have to look for an immediate solution.

Both veterinary teams are in contact and we all have our eyes, ears and hearts wide open.

We are going to look for the best solution for him: above all so that he does not lose his quality of life, so that he does not have to go back to eating pureed food... so that he can continue to be a happy dog.

Wish us all the luck that this blonde with honey eyes deserves ...'
