Pounds all over Spain are full of dogs of many colours, sizes and breeds. Podencos, bodegueros, mastins, Spanish water dog and many more, all can be found looking for a home. Each with their distinctive traits and temperaments. On this article we want to introduce you to one of the most common breeds found all over Spain, and in particular the south, the podenco.
Podencos are a sighthound bred to hunt. They change in size and colours but they all are very clever and intelligent, always very aware of its surroundings and sensitive to their human’s reactions. They are very curious and although they can be shy, they cannot help wanting to explore new things and places.
They are a strong breed highly resistant to illness. These dogs are used to hunt under a punishing sun for many hours and in spite of their fragile looking bodies they are very tough and resilient with a high pain threshold.
They are very affectionate and loyal. They would do anything for their humans. They can also be very stubborn and determined to get what they want. They also have good memories, always remembering each place when they found food once.
They can have a very strong hunting instinct and they need exercise and walks. If not given enough exercise they can become frustrated and destructive.
Overall, Podencos are dogs with big personalities, and getting to know this ancient breed is a privilege.
