Bev Farmer and warren Beards are always there for the podencos, no matter how many they have (one bitch recently rescued in the nick of time just gave birth) nor how desperate the situation. Read the story of Santana and please donate towards his vet feets.
'Santana has been with us a few days and we have been waiting for a lot of lab results to come in and an assessment by a orthopedic specialist. Another Podenco Ibicenco discovered in a lamentable condition his body so depleted he struggled to walk. Left as he was, he would not have survived.
He has a fracture to the right hip, the specialist has recommended not to operate, there is already a reaction to the bone so it's not a recent injury. Surgery could make it worse plus he is at very high risk to have anesthesia due to his poor body condition. For now, restricted exercise, pain meds and it may heal ok on its own. If not, in the future they will need to remove the head of the femur.
Another problem is his lack of coordination, this could be a neurological problem. He is also positive for Rickettsia with a very high count 1/1024 which means it's a chronic condition and can cause poor coordination, also Joint inflammation and pain and severe weight loss. Rickettsia is so easily preventable a monthly tick treatment for a few euros but these dogs are not worth the expense by their owners. We can not discount the effects of malnutrition which may contribute to the lack of co-ordination.
Ideally we would like to have a MRI on him to establish if it a neurological problem, but he just is in no condition to have an anesthesia which is needed to do a scan.
He is a very gentle natured dog and we do not know how long he was left in that condition. For now we monitor him and see if there is any improvement now he is getting quality food and medication.
Every time we rescue a Podenco in this state I wonder how they are still standing, nothing but skin and bones but their will to survive is strong.
We are in for the long haul with Santan,a it will take some time to bring him back to good health but we won't give up on him.
Santana's veterinary bills are mounting so we will be doing a fund raiser for them .. or if you would like to donate towards them, no matter how small, it will be greatly appreciated .
