From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends - desperate for podencos on Lanzarote
'As much as it gives us a sense of joy when we share the successful adoptions, the reality is we have to rescue these dogs from difficult circumstances and this is where it all starts.
Laura of the Kennel Club on Lanzarote and myself created a joint project "Saving the Lanzorote Podencos" and have worked together for over 4 years helping the Podencos on the island. Last week we had 4 fly over to Spain and we thought we had finally caught up and time to breathe. Sadly it just doesn't work like that and over a couple of days the perrera had 6 adult podencos and a puppy ranging from 6 months to 10 years old handed in along with some other dogs.
This place has very limited facilities, the dogs were over-crowded in small kennels and fights broke out and a couple of the Podencos were injured, So it begins ...
Laura has manged to take out the puppy and the three most vulnerable Podencos, the oldest one covered in sores and open wounds, another that needs surgery to her eyes, also one that was badly bitten in the fight who is getting treatment. They are now safe either at the veterinary clinic or in private residence. Over the next few days Laura and her team will remove the remaining three.
We need your help, 7 dogs to vaccinate, blood test etc, 3 already needing additional veterinary treatment and surgery plus residence fees. This comes with significant cost. Unlike the perrera on Gran Canary that will vaccinate, microchip, passport, blood test and neuter for free, with this perrera on Lanzarote there is no such funding, nothing, zero euros so we have to cover all these costs.
If we didn't take these Podencos out they are at risk, please if you can make a donation towards helping them we would be very grateful, the smallest amount will make the difference for these 7 dogs.
Thank you from Laura and Beverley
