In memory of an adorable little rescued Spanish hound

Katie was an adorable little Spanish spaniel rescued from a terrible life and adopted by a very dear friend here in France. She was tragically killed on a green lane by a driver who should not have been there. We all know the big hold the loss of a canine friend leaves in our hearts so I am posting this in memory of Katie. RIP little soul.

Today FAUDA has to give bad news to the Canarian society. Today she has to report that she has been left alone before the animal abuse, before the abandonment and before the zero sacrifice. Today FAUDA does not see that there is any kind of help from the Administrations. In short, everything promised to date by the Public Administrations has not been fulfilled.
Immersed in the month of August 2018, we are still waiting for the commitment of a new regulation of the Canary Islands Government for animal welfare, promised by said institution.

We warn of a great indifference to a social emergency in which the abandonment is far exceeding what can support the protectors and associations. Even the island hostel can no longer handle the current situation.
Given the extreme neglect of public administrations for the realization of an effective plan and the fulfillment of their promises, animal protection associations are forced to carry out only assistance measures, being overwhelmed by the social suffocation in which we find ourselves.

Support the Purple Poppy Campaign

The first Murphy’s Army Purple Poppy Campaign was launched in 2016 to encourage members of the public to come together to pay tribute to the many animals lost in Service, and to those who Serve us today.

Our research had shown that although the traditional red poppy was well known, the significance of the purple poppy – to remember the animals – was less so. Hopefully our efforts over the years have changed that as many more purple poppies are now being worn with pride.

In this very special anniversary year – 100 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front and the end of the First World War – let’s make our 2018 Purple Poppy Campaign an even greater success.

Please join with us and together let’s ensure that the animals who lost their lives during this conflict, those lost in Service since, and those who serve us today, are not forgotten but forever remembered alongside their human counterparts.

Podencos from Spain to Canada and forever homes

Mary Macdonald and 2 friends of GAPC of Canada travelled in May to Spain to visit a couple of refuges and to take back 3 podencos for forever homes. Here is her story.

'I went to Spain recently accompanied by 2 other GPAC volunteers, Rhonda Martins and her daughter Isabella. It was my first time being in Spain and a flight patron (flight buddy). We stayed a week volunteering at Podenco Friends, which was a very exciting and rewarding opportunity for me. I can’t express enough my gratitude and admiration for Bev and Warren who run Podenco Friends and all they do to help the dogs.

We flew back to Canada with 5 Podencos which were pre adopted, 3 from Podenco Friends and 2 from SOS Podenco Rescue. A couple of our adopters had offered to drive to Montreal to pick us up at the airport and drive us back home to Atlantic, Canada. This was a huge help when transporting the dogs and goes to show how dedicated our adopters are. When you adopt through GPAC, you are joining a family.

Amour des Galgos - Podenca Ricola looking for a forever home

This beautiful podenca is Ricola and she is now in a shelter under the care of ASBL association of Belgium. She is looking for her forever home. Here's what they say about her.

'Podenca born in July 2017. She is stunning, medium height but big of heart. She gets along well with people and other dogs. She was found on the street wearing a collar so tight she still has the marks. We need a family for her.

Flight buddies needed from Fuerteventura to Germany

Regular readers will know I try as much as possible to publicise the work of the rescue associations in the Canary Islands. The only hope for forever homes for their rescued podencos is on mainland Europe and across the Atlantic. Here is an appeal from Tierhilfe Fuerteventura for people to accompany their rescued dogs from the Island to Germany.

'This year the weather is so good that many German people understandably spend their holiday here. It's quite clear to our flight plan. This is clearly clearer than in recent years. We therefore ask all the tierlieben holidaymakers of the beautiful Canary Fuerteventura to report as potential flights :-). Maybe a dog can travel. There is no cost to the airline.
