Tip of the Needle - over vaccination of animals

Here is another article on the subject of vaccines and how often our dogs etc should have them. My horse hasn't had a vaccination for several years - he is retired - my dogs don't go anywhere to meet other dogs as we have our own meadows to talk in. At least for them, rabies vaccination is now only every 3 years. But they are still pumped up with the rest of the drugs! As one is 15, one 13 and one 9, surely they are well protected without still needing an annual vaccine?

Anyone else feel the same?

Heartbreak for galgos and podencos in La Manche

One of the emotional problems of helping the galgos and podencos of Spain is that one wants to help them all, especially those traumatized, injured and needing treatment...and the problem is as bad now as it was when I first became involved in 2007. The difference is that more people are aware of the problem, more people want to help, and more rescue and rehoming associations have been formed.

One lady who used to run a rescue in Greece now runs an animal sanctuary in La Manche, northern France. She has a huge caring heart and land and buildings to help needy animals. Sadly this has led her to difficulties with the French authorities, and you can read about it on this link.

The gendarmes took away 36 of her galgos and podencos to 2 SPA kennels (Societe Protection Animale) and dumped the dogs there without their medication, some with leishmania and a couple with cancer.

Of course Lynn is heartbroken, as am I thinking about the 36 dogs who were happy living carefree lives together, rather than chained to walls in dark buildings, starved by the hunters...neglected...

And now her reputation is being destroyed by the trolls on Facebook who are happily attacking her, rather than the rescue associations who kept sending dogs to her. Plus doing absolutely nothing to try and get the dogs out of the SPA kennels.

Podenco Aroa - surviving against the odds

Aroa, history of a survivor! Aroa, is a young podenco of just 6 months who was thrown into the water on a raft to drown him. But our Aroa is a brave and smart podenco and was able to get out to safety. He hurt a paw and lost a nail trying to save his life, luckily he's now healed.

He is too young to suffer like this. He's gone through hell. He made his way to a village but the children messed with him and scared him. But he is now safe and his luck has changed.

Despite everything which he has suffered is cheerful and very loving, he is good with other dogs and seeks a family that wants to give him the life he deserves. He is healthy and when grown will weigh about 12 pounds.

Podenca Reina, happy ever after in Holland

Do you remember little Podenca Reina, rescued injured from a roadway? Some of you probably donated towards her medical fees to help her back on the road to recovery. She was adopted through Podencoworld in Holland. I hope you can see this video of her with her adoptive mom.

Norway to ban adoption of 'street dogs' from 1 July 2018

Very tragic news for podencos, as many of them are adopted there, particularly through Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.

The Norwegian Defra, Mattilsynet, just released a statement re import of dogs, what they call “street dogs", defines as dogs from shelters/rescues, dogs without owners, dogs with unknown background.

Main points:

1. These dogs will no longer be legal to commercially import.
2. As a private person, you must be able to document that the dog have been owned by you, and lived with you, for minimum 6 months before entering Norway.

Bascially, this means it is no longer possible to adopt/import a rescue dog from over seas effective from the 1st July 2018

Last weekend we have traveled to Murcia to collect more animals whose lives were in serious danger.
The people who rescue them, in the end, always end up getting in touch with us, because despite their multiple appeals, can no other association help them save the lives of these innocent beings?. Total has been 24 dogs, between galgos and podencos. And other animals.......

The black galgo is one of the picked up dogs this weekend in Murcia, he has a broken leg and a vet gave the owner the advice to kill him ?? because the operation would cost a lot of money and he would probably never be able anymore to run enough fast for hunting...

Although we have rescued this year various animals with fractures and almost drown in the costs, we can not look the other way and leave this galgo being killed one way or the other?.
