Valencia - P.E.P.A. at work on the streets

PEPA rescues many podencos from Valencia province, Rosemary Macdonald tells the story of Bonnie.

'This is Bonnie who was in danger of having her puppies on the streets of Valencia. Now less than a week later here she is the proud mum of seven at the moment healthy pups. We have been given promises of help with these puppies so I hope everyone helps us as we will need foster for them in about 5-6 weeks.'

Madrid, capital city of Spain - cheap accommodation

El Refugio are very good at getting media coverage for large scale rescues and exposing how Spanish hunting dogs are kept. Here is film of the latest rescue of 52 dogs, mostly podencos, kept in appalling conditions. Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends has translated.

Podenca Verity - a severe case of mange, anaemia and starvation!

This poor podenco has been named Verity. She was found in this terrible state and taken to Little Pod Association, who took her straight to their vet. She is suffering from an horrendous case of mange, her blood count is down to just of 15 so she is also severely anaemic, as well as seriously starving.

'Let's start with the good news (yes there is some good news!!)

Verity's initial blood tests show she is amazingly negative for all diseases (Leishmania, Filaria, Ehrlichia, Lymmes)... We have to wait for the next set of results from the lab to make sure but we are all completely astounded by this

The second piece of good news is that Verity doesn't appear to have any broken bones or injuries that require any major surgery

Podenco Maneto - big characters in small bodies - looking for forever homes

Maria Vidal writes about two beautiful podencos she has in foster, who need forever homes.

'I write from Málaga to ask your help. I need to find this two dogs a forever home, can you help me? (sorry if I make too many mistakes, my English is not very good)

These are Chicha (light brown) and Koka (brown and white). They are two young female dogs that were abandoned and ill-treated by a hunter. They were born in some kind of puppy mill that breed Manetos (a mutation of the Podenco with shorter paws created in Andalucia), they have the marks that the breeders tattooed on the ears of the dogs so everyone can know where they were bought (it's the brand). They were sold to a man that taught them to hunt. He left them into a garage and only took them out in hunting season and used them to give birth new puppies twice a year. A couple of years later he decided to abandon the older one, Koka, so he cut her neck, took the microchip out and left her on the street, but then, Chicha ran as fast as she could to escape too. We don't know how desperate she had to be as to leave her own puppies behind and run away.

Best way to help podencos? Join an existing rescue association

It's depressing how many hundreds of podencos are abandoned and dumped in perreras every week - as with the galgos, there is now no let up during the summer months after hunting ends..,Podenco facebook pages are full of gorgeous podencos needing forever homes...I simply can't post them all here!

One new development in the past 18 months which does concern me is that, with photos circulating on Facebook of podencos in perreras, some people who live outside of Spain are trying to organise rescuing them and putting them in kennels, sometimes with negative results. Unfortunately this can give podencos a bad name and it's not good for the dogs themselves.

Saving Alaska - Podenco Friends respond

This poor podenco was dumped in a perrera by the owner. Appeals were made on my facebook page Podenco Post to save 'Grandpa Oldie' by people outside of Spain. Although she has double the number of podencos she originally planned on having, all waiting for adoption - Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends stepped in to save Grandpa Oldie.

Grandpa Oldie turned out to be an 11-year old female called Alaska who had been taken to the perrera by her owner, along with an up-to-date vaccination record! Bev says, 'she is not underweight and looks to be well cared for.' However, as with all rescued dogs, Bev took Alaska to her vet for checking over, as she was not happy with swelling around her stomach and she also had a temperature.

Until recently Scooby didn't rescue podencos but that changed when they recently took in dozens more animals, amongst them pregnant horses, ferrets, goats...all fed on potato crisps! Here's what Fermin has to say about their podencos.

Ticks and fleas on abandoned dogs - podenca fights back!

This little podenca puppy is 3 months old, she was found abandoned with a huge infestation of ticks and fleas. She's been named Skylar and is being treated but, not surprisingly with the number of huge ticks filled with her blood, she has jaundice. Fingers crossed for the sweet baby. She is with Pepa, if you can help find a forever home for her when she is better. Adorable - how could anyone lose her!

Portuguese Podengo - rescued from the streets, needs her forever home

Look at this gorgeous little Portuguese Podenco - she was lucky to be rescued, Portugal has a bad record for canine suffering. She deserves to live the rest of her life with a family. Please contact Dogs of Portugal if you can help her.
