Surrounded by Podencos...adopt one

Another lovely rehoming story, from Janice Ball, who proves that podencos are addictive - you can't have just one, you need more!

The story of how I came to own 4 Podencos is down to me joining facebook, until then I had never heard of a Podenco! I started to see them on various rescue sites and then I spotted Suzi who had been in kennels for over 2 years and no one had enquired about her, she really touched my heart strings and I just fell in love with her. I adopted her there and then and she came over in 2013. She has been with me now a year and she is the prettiest most loving dog ever who greets all her fellow brothers and sisters every morning with kisses and licks. She loves all people and dogs but is not too keen on cats or birds as she sees these as something to chase as she has almost certainly done a bit of hunting at some point in her past life in Spain.

Sos Podencorescue was founded in September 2013 and ever since the day María Casares and I got together we have worked tirelessly to save, heal, rehabilitate and re-home as many Pods as our finances and the space at the residency would allow.

Podenco Canario Lisa - happy in a forever home

It's always great to have a happy homing story. Here's one about a lucky Podenca Canario rescued and rehomed by TARA association.

'LISA joined the TARA family 11 months ago when she was found on a goat farm that was soon christened "hell" Some caring tourists had stumbled across this place, and could not believe the conditions the animals were kept in.

Everyday they took food and water to the dogs, and knew they wanted to help some escape these conditions. They contacted TARA and asked for help, and we stepped in to ensure that at least some of the dogs could be saved.

Pet Official Status in France

The official status of animals in France has been upgraded. The Civil Code from the reign of Napoleon (most things date from then!) states that pets were classified as personal property, which is the same status as furniture.

Now pets have officially been amended to sentient status (creatures with feelings).

Pity they can't do that for the hunting dogs in Spain.

Lex - still desperate

Still desperately seeking a foster or forever home for Lex. He could fly to the UK at the beginning of August, if there is a foster/forever home for him.

How not to foster a dog

I'm going to write a piece about fostering dogs. Fosterers are vitally important people; they take on the responsibility of a dog when it has been rescued, toilet training, manners, getting it used to living in a house, socialising it...it's a big responsibility. Fosterers are really valuable people and we don't under-estimate this. Often we end up keeping our foster dog...how many of you have been there.

These four lovely podencos are lucky, they were saved and are now all living comfortable lives with Janice Ball in the UK. Here's who they are.

'My four Pods together, just so everyone can see how different they all are, they come in all sizes!! Suzi (white) and little Paco (front right) come from Spanish Stray Dogs UK. Paco is a Podenco Maneto and is quite small with his little legs. Casey and Scarlet are Andalaz Podencos. There are some much bigger as well, so you see there is a Podenco for everyone. So many are discarded every year in Spain and they make such wonderful pets, please do think about adopting one, so many are waiting.'

Hundreds of podencos are being killed every week in the perreras. That's because there are hundreds in foster and kennels and refuges waiting to be adopted, so there is no space for the perrera pods. Here's a comprehensive list of rehoming associations.

Portuguese Podengos - 2 more urgently needing forever homes

Two more podengos in Portugal who have been waiting far too long for forever homes. Here are the details of Vigo, who I mentioned before - and Branqhuina - Branqhuina especially needs a forever home as she will shortly have to leave her foster. Here is Branqhuina on video - Piloto was her puppy who has been rehomed.
