Anke Zeldenhurst is the contact for all dogs in the Valencia perrera. Here she explains how you can help save the life of a dog there, in our case - podencos. At the end of the article you will find the description of all the podencos in the perrera.
dogs from Valencia perrera can be saved by:
adoption in Spain
Any associations who take the dog
foster home in Spain
sponsors so i can take the dog out and get him/her to a residence, where we have space.
Basic costs for all dogs to leave the perrera = 62 euro = release fee.
transport is 30 euro when the dog has to travel ouside Valencia region: for some foster homes and for the residence.
Stay in the residence is 30 euro per week per dog. which is not cheap, trying to get the price down, but the pension we deal with in Valencia is full.
this residence i know and trust completely: two of my dogs were there and taken very good care of.
People from outside Spain should not write to the Valencia volunteers: they get completely nervous about it because dogs are not allowed to be adopted directly by foreigners. They accept donations, but will not answer questions about dogs...Seprona is constantly watching them.
Donating (release fee (and/or transport) in advance is not accepted by the volunteers: if the dog is killed before they find a place to go, they would have to give the money back: too complicated to keep up with.
I can get the dogs out, because the dogs will be put in my name: they have all my personal ID information because I adopted a dog from them: that was allowed thanks to references from Spanish volunteers.
So, I am/feel responsible for the dogs as they have my name on them.
Dominique and I have paid for 6 dogs to leave the perrera and stay safe in pension and residence : we still need sponsors for these dogs and adoption off course !!
Sometimes they have a foster home waiting, in that case release fee and transport (when outside region) is needed: max 92 euro.
We now have two podenco’s in the residence:
Athos, a young big male. very gentle, but young, so active: he needs adoption (through an association)!!!! and/or sponsors until adopted...
Joya, a wire haired female, also young we guess. she has just arrived and is sponsored for a while by two ladies. She also needs adoption (through an association)!!
I have also enclosed pictures of the podenco’s who are still in the perrera :
8 months old podenca
podenca, who looks small (pic = “podenco bij athos”)
white young female together with 3 ? year old male
small one in front is 6 years old, a CESE dog (owner surrender so no waiting time) together with the one who was with Athos)
There are no foster homes offered (yet) for them.
So to get them out fast would mean: an association to take the dog out, or 92 euro to get out and to the residence, from there 30 per week for the stay until adoption.
I have had offers for donations from a few people: problem is it is not enough to get a dog out and transported and cared for, so I can’t put it at direct use then..if the dog is killed before I have enough donations, I would have to pay back: also complicated..or use it for another podenco.
So please let any one who donates state for which dog it is meant and, if not possible for that one, what to do with the money: use it for another or pay back or.......
i don’t want misunderstandings about the use of donations...?
Athos is also still in need of donations for his stay in the residence....
so, it is a difficult matter....
For questions about the dogs in residence or perrera: e-mail me bracobuddha@hotmail.com
i also added a file i keep with expenses paid and donations received: most dogs are no podenco’s but athos and Joya are listed too..
I hope everyone gets a better insight on the complete picture of “our”dogs...and that I have explained it well enough!
For anyone who wants to save one of these podencos, please consider joining up with a friend or 3 to share the cost.
Photos herewith in order - Athos, Joya, 8 month old (with hand on pic), small podenco Andaluz (pointy ears), white female and brown male, small 6yr old and Cesse (dumped by owner)
