You may remember an appeal for someone to make room in a refuge of home for an injured podenca who had been living rough since October. I'm happy to report that she has now been saved. The podenca has been named Ana, after the village where she had been living. She has been taken in by 112carlotagalgos, travelling by their pet transport company from Ana, Valencia, down to Malaga. Here's her story.
'In the darkness of the world of a Podenca in Spain, a life unwanted with little gain. She wanders through life and just exists with all her might. Days turn into nights, and nights into days. For the loneliness in her heart just beats her down. No longer wanted, no longer needed, just dumped to her "luck" she wanders the streets. The hunger in her stomach, the ache in her bones just too much to take. Lame from either a trap or car accident, her foot is bad. It hurts so much, but she continues her way through her abandoned life.
Her galguero replaces her with new stock, its the end of the season and she just isn't required. Not required to receive a beating, nor scramble amongst the rest of the hounds to grab the crumbs on the floor. Amongst those who can even be chained to the roof and floor.. who knows, for this podenca just cannot say.
Taken to the streets, escaped? Dumped? She wanders the night and runs through the days. Any old food will do for this ache in her stomach. As time goes by, it's October, .. the cold sets in and the nights freeze. The podenca lays down in pain.. rolls around and groans. Aside from the hunger and the ache in her bones, she gives birth to 3 puppies. Now a proud Mother she has more on her plate, and little does she know it but her flesh and blood could be gold for a galguero. In danger of them disappearing, she raises them the best she can.. until Rosemary finds this lost soul and her babies.
Rosemary begins to lay food for this starving girl, but in fear and panic she won't come near. Over a few months consistency wins, and Rosemary fearing the worst finds homes for her babies. Safe away from what would be hunters' stealing hands and a life of danger, the babies are safe. Poor Podenca.
Rosemary continues to come and be a faithful friend to Podenca who has no name. Asking around no-one will take her, and she cannot either. Theres no room at the inn for Podenca, the local Protectora won't take in a podenca. As time goes by she gains faith in her new friend who lays food for her and a closeness begins. Podenca can now be touched. Caressed but still no room at the inn for her. No-one will take her. Exhausting efforts made, and there is just no slot. Until I was contacted by Beryl (Galgo News) and Rosemary herself.
I have never said no yet, and won't start here. We named podenca Ana. For she deserves a name of her own. She will have a future now, and will be safe. Her plight is as many, as hundreds of thousands of Galgos, podencos and other breeds in Spain face. Ignored by those in government who can actually make change. The crisis makes lives worse.. and makes way for ignorance.
Ana was taken to the vet where she tested negative for the diseases and her leg x-rayed. Broken, with bits of bone floating around. Dioni 112carlotagalgos animal transport collected her from Valencia. Ana came to 112 carlota galgos and was welcomed with open arms. We will do all we can for her, all we can to heal her and find her forever. A home and family of her own.
The dawn of the day breaks the dark night and with it for Ana brings hope and love.
Ana is a large podenca, the vets says the damage to her leg is old and treatment/operation will be expensive. The vet says the bone keeps reinfecting and so will havwe to be operated on.
My troup of hounds accepted Ana well, they always do. Ana is an absolutely stunning podenca with amber eyes and an untrusting look. Hungry for affection, and at 112 carlotagalgos stables we are not short of that. Right now the change is hard..the wild to confinement and humankind who have been responsible for her pain and lack of care. Here we make a promise of love, recovery and a home of her own. She will come through as our routine kicks in and she will see here she will only gain. Welcome aboard Ana'.
Thank you to Rosemary for contacting me to ask for my help. Thank you to 112carlotagalgos for taking her in, and for transporting her from Valencia to Malaga.
