SARA Lanzarote (Canary Islands) have sent this story about this podenca bitch, yet another of life's victims discarded by the hunters. Podencos are used on the Spanish islands for hunting rabbit, and suffer horrendous cruelty at the hands of the hunters, just like the galgos and podencos on mainland Spain. The only hope for the deserving dogs in the shelters on Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Ibiza, is to be adopted on the European mainland. Please bear them in mind when considering offering a forever home to a dog. Otherwise these dogs will spend their lives in the shelters.
SARA tells Mestiza's story.
'The emergency department called us to go to look for an injured dog. Upon arrival there was a puddle of blood on the road and she was in the bush, one feet below, on the street, with a broken leg. We took her to the vet who, sadly could not save the leg because of the injuries, and had to amputate it.
The dog had a microchip, but the owner did not want to take charge of the operation "because she no longer served him without a leg" ...'
Mestiza was very frightened, she spent days in the courtyard at the shelter, surrounded by people and other dogs as if they were not with her, staring from one side to another. She let the dogs come over and sniff her without a problem, but did not want anything to do with them herself. She was the same with people but afraid to even look you in the face.
Now her expression has changed, every day she is happier. When she sees someone she wags her tail, loves to come and smell you, and looks you in the eyes Still, if you are patient, she approaches you and let you caress her. She lives With the other dogs together without problems, she is curious and follows them to smell them, always with calm and serenity.
She waits for a second chance in life, someone who can look beyond the physical handicap and see through into those deep eyes ...'
