Red is one of the podencos featured on my FB page Help the Podencos. He has been in the care of Silvia of Galgo Connection Spain since his rescue - this is the picture from when he was rescued, see the photos of him now in his forever home at the end of this post, isn't he just soooo handsome!
And this is an amazing story about saving a miniature Podenco Andaluz in Miami. His forever Mom tells the story.
'Miami, Florida USA; a Mecca of unwanted pets. Miami Dade animal services intakes up to 200 pets per day, and with lines out the door at opening, people are dumping their pets and turning in strays...it can only lead to high euthanasia rate- about 150 per day.
I have a Miniature Pinscher, from the love of my own dog, Nicky, I couldn't stand to see a dog of this breed put to sleep, if I had room in my home to foster or had an open foster, then I would take it. I was volunteering with a rescue association a little over a year ago and just started putting holds on all the Miniature Pinschers that came in. If they couldn't find an adopter within the short stay they were given, the shelter would call me and I would do the rescue.
At the end of the week, all of the dogs on my list were safe, but by the weekend, I got a call that one of the adopters never showed up and I needed to go pick up a red Miniature Pinscher. I brought him home and fell in love immediately. I adored my, "buzz". I officially became a foster failure - why? I decided to keep Buzz forever! (Easy to see why they thought he was a miniature pinscher from the pic below)
A short while later, somehow, I stumbled onto a picture of several dogs that looked just like Buzz. At that moment, I realized these dogs have a very distinct look and he couldn't possibly be a Miniature Pinscher. I started researching different dog breeds and I came across the Podenco Andaluz and it was all him! Someone must have cut his tail off and the poor thing has trouble with his sharp turns, but I don't care.
The only thing I can think of is that Miami has a big international port and somehow he got on w cargo. He is a goofy dog to begin with, so having no tail makes him look even more funny. They did a terrible job on the crop, way too short. since he can't wag it, he talks, to show excitment and happiness, which makes me love him more...it's like a whole conversational piece! When he plays, you can see a little bone moving from side to side!
He also has a chunk of his side missing, the vet says maybe it's just a birth defect. He has such a handsome face and then his body is just an oddity! Maybe you can answer this. His entire chest area is so bloated. I feed him a grain free diet, only a cup per day and we go for walks and he is always playing. Does this breed need something special, as far as diet, to make him lean, like the rest of his breed?
I feel so blessed, because God knows how this dog even got to the United States! Here, he is a rare breed and so special and unique...I wish I could save more, but I have yet to come across another. I am still learning about this breed and information has been difficult to come across, but I hope one day, I can expand my Podenco family!
A fascinating story - as Deven says, however did he end up abandoned and lost in Miami, USA! I can't imagine my little Bebe without a tail - hers never stops wagging!
