How many of you travel to the Canary Islands in search of sunshine, sand and sea. But do you know what goes on behind the scenes, everyday life for the people and animals who live on these islands year in and year out?
It's extremely difficult for the podencos on the Spanish islands to find forever homes. Their only chance is on mainland Europe. Some of them are adopted in Germany, a few in the UK. Here are some of the beauties at the SARA Protectora shelter on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
LUISA – she loves sniffing and smelling everything she sees. She goes well with other dogs and is quiet and loving. She doesn’t pull on the lead when you walk her.
MILLO – He doesn’t have a hunting instinct, he is very loving, needs petting and he’s absolutely obedient. When you walk him, he doesn’t pull you at all.
PITTAWAY (see above) – is active and a lively dog. He loves running and pulls a bit on the lead but just needs training. He is very affectionate with people and gets on well with other dogs. He is quite submissive.
BENJAMIN – He is an awesome beautiful young dog, full of energy and very playful. He has a nose for scent but being a young dog, just needs training. He’s an obedient, loving and kind animal. He enjoys playing with other dogs and is quiet when walking.
KANELA – she's a fairly dominant female especially around food. She loves people, is obedient and would benefit from more training. She is affectionate and usually gets along friendly with other males or females. She doesn’t pull on the lead, she listens to instructions.
All these podencos would make marvellous companions, and being young, could also be trained for dog agility.
For more information, contact SARA Protectora on Lanzarote. Please give these fabulous dogs a chance of a life outside kennels.
Here's the link to know who the volunteers are at SARA Lanzarote. Sadly, my two English contacts are not there.
And don't forget, if you live on the island, give the refuge some help - they desperately need volunteers to clean kennels, walk dogs, fundraise, help in the shop - every dog deserves some of your love.
sara lanzarote have some truly beautiful podencos looking for home, but they have so many together with all sorts of other breeds they must surely be getting to bursting point soon, hope some of these gorgeous dogs (and cats) get homes soon so the shelter can carry on taking in others in need.
