Tell everyone what life is REALLY like on the Canary Islands - all of them, even the smallest island - for podencos. Please don't turn away, your sorrow is nothing compared to the suffering of these hounds. If you want to help, get in touch with any of the associations on this list - they need all the help they can get.
Great read about volunteers at Scooby in March, especially to learn that all the podencos they rescued recently are either in foster or adoptant homes. Do think about taking a 'holiday' and volunteering at Scooby. Besides the hotel mentioned in the report, Scooby also offer caravan accommodation. And don't forget, Scooby have hundreds of animals for adoption - dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, donkeys, poultry...
Do you remember Frank, the injured podenco rescued in December? I'm sure regular readers certainly will!! Here's an update on him from Bev Farmer which you will be pleased to read. Thank you again to everyone who donated to help him.
Besides posting pieces on my blogs, I do a lot of work for the galgos and podencos 'behind the scenes'. In 2013 I was contacted by a professional English photographer who wanted to photograph the galgos and show both sides of their lives, and wanted help in many ways, including some refuges to visit. His book is now nearly complete and I've just helped him with finalising a few details in his Introduction.
I've been publicising the plight of the podencos for many years; they have always been overlooked in favour of the galgos because of the galgo's similarity to the Greyhound. NOW I am pleased to announce it is the turn of the podencos and I'm really excited about it!
Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends has passed on this word of warning about Cani Leish. Cani leish was launched in 2012 a vaccine developed that was supposed to prevent dogs contracting leishmania. Shenever bought in to it and never had any of her dogs vaccinated with it. Read this and it will explain why there is a petition to have the vaccine withdrawn here in Spain.
'We are propietors of affected dogs or dead after administration of CaniLeish and people concerned about the health and welfare of dogs. We want this drug gets withdrawn by its apparent high level of toxicity, and so they stop hurting dogs.
TOWELS AND BLANKETS ARE NEEDED FOR THE REFUGE. Any of my local friends could you please contact me if you have any you no longer need. We are running very low at the refuge. When our foster dogs arrive in April, I will be able to send them back with the transport. Let me know if you have any , thank you in advance.
The story of Moreno, from Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.
For many months we have been talking with the local hunters to show them there is an alternative for the Podencos they no longer want or need. Last week they handed Moreno into our care. He needs a complicated surgery to try and save his front leg. This is from a fracture that happened over a year ago and was left to heal with no treatment. If gives him a lot of pain at the moment, he is just about terrified of everything. We are working with him to try and build a level of trust in us.
